It’s been a minute

We’ve been quiet recently. But believe that there’s movement beneath the surface. Editor in Chief Marie-Anne Leuty (she/her) gets into what’s been going down…

Yes, we’ve been low key lately.

If you’re new to the platform I want to say hi, I’m Marie-Anne and welcome to our space. I’m happy you’re here.

If you’ve been following us for a while, also ‘hi’! I’ve got some exciting updates for you.

As with any start-up venture, a lot of plates have to keep spinning behind the scenes for things to work. We started to develop The Quick + The Brave back in 2018 and every day of the process brings a new lesson. The past six months have been particularly educational so we made the decision to focus our energy on getting our foundation strong before picking the story back up.

So, what’s been going on since we last saw each other?

Journal 001 came out a year ago this month and we were bowled over by the positive responses. We live in the digital age but, damn, we’re suckers for print

And it seems that we’re not the only ones. You all wanted to get your mitts on Journal 001 too. As well as distributing across the country, we shipped orders to the Netherlands, the UK, the US… copies even made their way to Tokyo, Singapore and Réunion Island.

It started with us getting DMs from people saying how much the content resonated with them. Before long, we started to hear from institutions and agencies interested in learning more about who we are and what we do.

I can’t lie – releasing a self-funded publication that’s so personal and purpose-led is terrifying so to get these responses was very special.

The journal was a catalyst. To give you an idea of what we’ve been up to since the summer, we:

  • Secured a new HQ and content studio in Amsterdam Zuidoost
  • Refurbished said HQ and content studio
  • Spent a small fortune at hardware stores
  • Discovered a love for workwear overalls
  • Embarked on multiple Marktplaats trips to pick up second-hand furniture (including a stint to Belgium)
  • Worked on some fun client projects for Amsterdam-based creatives
  • Spoken at a diversity and inclusion event at a leading design school

In short, too much to fit into one blog. So you’ll see more of our story in upcoming posts.

As a BIPOC-founded platform, we’re here to claim space, build community and dig into the topics that matter most to us: culture, inclusivity, sustainability and self-care. Our newsletter will start in the coming weeks.

Oh, and you can still order Journal 001 (because I know you wanted to ask).
